Calculating gross to net salary in Suriname

How much of your gross wage do you take home? In Suriname, wage tax, the AOV contribution and the FVO contribution are deducted from the gross wage, and often a pension contribution too. Below we go from gross to net step by step, using the rates that apply in 2026. Want the answer straight away? Use the free calculator.

Step 1: deduct the flat-rate amount

First, a flat-rate deduction of 4% is taken off the gross wage, up to SRD 400 per month (SRD 4,800 per year). For a gross wage of SRD 8,000 that is SRD 320; for SRD 20,000 it is the maximum of SRD 400.

Step 2: deduct the tax-free allowance

No wage tax is due on the first SRD 9,000 per month (SRD 108,000 per year) of the taxable wage. This amount is deducted before the tax brackets are applied.

Step 3: wage tax by bracket

What remains is taxed per month in four brackets:

  • 8% on the first SRD 3,500
  • 18% on the part from SRD 3,500 to SRD 7,000
  • 28% on the part from SRD 7,000 to SRD 10,500
  • 38% on everything above SRD 10,500

Step 4: the AOV contribution

Employees pay a 4% AOV contribution (Algemene Oudedagsvoorziening, the general old-age pension). It is withheld from the wage on top of the wage tax.

Step 5: the FVO contribution

The FVO contribution is mandatory too. It consists of an employee share of 0.5% and an employer share of 0.5% of the gross wage. Only the employee share is withheld from the wage: for a gross wage of SRD 20,000 that is SRD 100. The employer pays its own share on top of the wage.

Step 6: pension and other deductions

If there is a pension scheme, the pension contribution is deducted as well. How much that is depends on the pension fund, such as the APF, and your employer’s scheme. There may also be other deductions, such as advances or a health insurance contribution. What remains is your net pay.

Overtime, bonus and holiday pay

Overtime is taxed separately, at reduced rates of 5%, 15% and 25%. Holiday pay (vakantiegeld) and a bonus each have their own tax exemption of SRD 19,500, once a year.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay in Suriname?
That depends on your wage. The first SRD 108,000 per year (SRD 9,000 per month) is tax-free. Above that you pay 8%, 18%, 28% or 38%, depending on the bracket. On top of that you pay a 4% AOV contribution and a 0.5% FVO contribution.
What is the difference between gross and net pay?
Gross pay is your wage before deductions. Net pay is what lands in your account after wage tax, the AOV contribution, the FVO contribution and any pension contribution and other deductions.
How much FVO do I pay?
The FVO contribution is mandatory. As an employee you pay 0.5% of the gross wage, which the employer withholds from your wage. The employer also pays 0.5% itself.
How much AOV do I pay?
Employees pay a 4% AOV contribution. The employer withholds it together with the wage tax and pays it to the tax authority.
Can I also calculate from net to gross?
Yes. The tax.sr calculator can also gross up: enter the net pay you want and see the gross wage that goes with it.
